The Jewish Leadership Academy (“JLA,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) provides this privacy policy to describe how we collect, use, and share the information of individuals who visit our website (www.jlamiami.org) and the other online or offline JLA services that link to these terms (the “Services”). This policy also describes your choices about the collection and use of your information.

Please read this policy carefully before you start to use our Services, which are subject to this policy and our posted Terms of Use (the “Terms”). Please see Sections 8, 9, 11 and 13 in our terms regarding your legal rights in any dispute involving our services, including a waiver of rights to a jury trial or class action.

Information Collection

We may collect information about you through various means, including:

  • Directly from you, both online (e.g., website, email) and offline (e.g., at our campus, events, phone);
  • Through your use of our websites or related online services; and
  • From other third party sources and social media platforms that you may use to engage with us, as well as from our affiliates or to third parties for the purposes provided below, and/or to supplement information we already possess.

Types of Information We Collect

In order to provide you with our Services, we may collect the following categories of information:

  • Profile information, such as name, address, phone number, email address, and account preferences;
  • Transactional information, such as billing and payment information, and transaction history (tuition, purchases, donations);
  • Financial assistance information, such as tax returns, income/asset information and other relevant data necessary for processing, compliance and verification purposes in connection with to financial assistance programs;
  • Student application information, such as parent information (contact information, professional activities and community affiliations) and student information (name, gender, date of birth, academic history);
  • Program activities, such as academic and athletic programs (including admissions and student records), travel, events, employment, sponsorships and fundraising;
  • Survey information in response to questions we may send you, including for inquiries, feedback and research purposes;
  • System logs such as your account settings and use of our Services;
  • Communications between you and us, such as via email, mail, phone, or other channels;
  • Offline activity you directly engage with us, if any; and
  • Online activity described in the next section.

Additionally, you may provide personal information about JLA students, prospective students or other individuals interested in JLA, such as their name, contact information, interests and educational information. We may collect this information, for instance, when you submit an admission inquiry. If you provide us with information regarding another individual, you represent that you are authorized to provide their information for use in accordance with this policy.

Online Activity, Cookies and Information Collected by Other Automatic Means

Cookies are a commonly-used web technology that allows websites to store and retrieve certain information on a user’s system, and track user’s online activities. We, together with the vendors we use, may collect information about your use of our Services by such automated means, including but not limited to cookies, pixels and other similar technologies.

Cookies and similar technologies can help us automatically identify you when you return to our website. Cookies help us review traffic patterns, improve the website, and determine what Services are popular. We can also use such information to deliver customized content and advertising to users of the Services whose behavior indicates that they are interested in a particular area.

When you use the Services, the information we may collect by automated means include, for example:

  • Usage details about your interaction with our Services (such as date, time, and length of visits, and specific pages or content accessed during the visits, search terms, frequency of the visits, referring website addresses);
  • Device information, including the IP address and other details of a device that you use to connect with our Services (such as device type and unique device identifier, operating system, browser type, mobile network information, and the device’s telephone number); and
  • Location information where you choose to provide the website with access to information about your device’s location.

If a user does not want information collected through the use of cookies, most browsers allow the visitor to reject cookies, but if you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to fully experience the interactive features our Services provide. We may share non-personal information we obtained via cookies with our analytics providers. 

How We Use Information
We may use the information we collect for any lawful purpose, including the following: 

  • To provide JLA’s Services, including to process admission applications, as needed to administer payment transactions and financial assistance programs, and to operate our academic and other programs;
  • To respond to your inquiries and requests;
  • To provide updates, surveys, and other content that may be of interest to you;
  • To process financial transactions, offer financial assistance programs, and fundraise;
  • For organizational purposes, such as analytics, research, advertising and marketing, payment processing, and operational purposes;
  • To maintain, operate, customize, and improve the Services, and diagnose or fix technology problems;
  • Analyze and enhance our communications and strategies (including by identifying when emails sent to you have been received or read);
  • Inform you about changes to our programs, policies and activities; 
  • To comply with and enforce as needed legal requirements, industry standards, our policies, and our contractual rights, and to maintain the safety and security of our Services and JLA; and
  • As otherwise disclosed at the time of collection or use. 

We may use or share information we collect in an anonymized or aggregate manner for many purposes such as research, analysis, modeling, marketing, fundraising and improvement of our Services. For example, we may provide anonymized and aggregated financial assistance, tuition and student information for fundraising purposes and to promote our academic programs.

Information Sharing and Disclosure

We will not generally disclose your personal information to third parties without your consent, subject to the following circumstances:

  • Limited information (e.g., IP address, pageview, etc.) may be collected through third party online tools such as analytics cookies, as described above. As explained above, you can take certain steps to prevent such collection.
  • We may share personal information with our affiliates under common control and service providers that we believe need the information to perform a technology, operational, or other professional function for us (examples include: IT services, student and academic services, maintenance and hosting of our online services, financial services and payment processing, marketing partners, professional advisors and other service providers). We only provide such parties with information so they can perform their required functions on our behalf. 
  • We may disclose limited personal information to governmental institutions where necessary to qualify for grants and other funding programs that support our students, academic programs and other operations.
  • We may disclose personal information (i) if we are required to do so by law or legal process, (ii) when we believe disclosure is necessary to prevent harm or financial loss, (iii) in connection with an investigation or suspected or actual fraudulent or illegal activity, or (iv) under exigent circumstances to protect the safety and security of our staff, students, community, other users, and the public. 
  • We reserve the right to transfer the information we maintain in the event we sell or otherwise transfer all or a portion of our organization or assets. If we engage in such a sale or transfer, we will make reasonable efforts to direct the recipient to use your personal information in a manner that is consistent with this policy.

We do not share text message program enrollment or consent information with third parties for their own purposes.

Third-Party Tools and Links

The Services may provide links to third-party websites or apps.  We do not control the privacy practices of those websites or apps, and they are not covered by this privacy policy.  You should review the privacy policies of other websites or apps that you use to learn about their data practices.

The Services also include integrated social media tools or “plug-ins,” such as social networking tools offered by third parties.  If you use these tools to share personal information or you otherwise interact with these features on the Services, those companies may collect information about you and may use and share such information in accordance with your account settings, including by sharing such information with the general public.  

Your interactions with third-party companies and your use of their features are governed by the privacy policies of the companies that provide those features.  We encourage you to carefully read the privacy policies of any accounts you create and use.

Your Privacy Choices

We offer you certain choices about what information we collect from you, howe we use and disclose the information, and how we communicate with you.

    • Parents and legal guardians can use our website’s Parent Portal to access relevant account/student information. You can also contact us to request information or changes, as appropriate.
    • To opt out of our email marketing, you can use the link provided at the bottom of a marketing message.  If you opt out of our email marketing, we may still send you messages related to our transactions and relationship with you, such as information about your child’s application to, or attendance at, JLA.
    • Web browsers may offer users the ability to disable certain cookies; however, if cookies are disabled, some features or functionality of our Services may not function correctly.
  • If you affirmatively consent to receive text messages from us and enroll in such a program, you will receive updates via text unless you opt-out of the text message program. These messages may be unencrypted. Message frequency may vary based on the Services. If at any time you would like to stop receiving text message notifications, please text “STOP” in reply to our message, we will send you a reply message to confirm that you have been unsubscribed and you will no longer receive messages from us. 

How We Protect and Retain Information

We endeavor to maintain reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards to protect the personal information we maintain against accidental, unlawful or unauthorized destruction, loss, alteration, access, disclosure or use. However, we cannot ensure the security of any information you transmit to us, or guarantee that this information will not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed. We will make any legally required disclosures in the event of any compromise of personal information. To the extent the law allows us to provide such notification via e-mail or conspicuous posting on the Services, you agree to accept notice in that form. 

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes we collected it for, including for any business, legal, accounting or reporting requirements. To determine the appropriate retention period for such personal information, we consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of the information, the purposes for which process the information and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, as well as all applicable legal requirements. 

Children’s Information

We collect information about minor prospective and current students from their parents, legal guardians or other suitable parties—and directly from students—to provide our academic and other programs. This includes technology geared for student use. We are extra sensitive to the collection, use and disclosure of such information, consistent with applicable laws and educational practices.

We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 on our website or other adult-oriented services without parental/guardian approval, and will endeavor to promptly delete any information upon discovery and request.

Changes to Our Privacy Policy

If our personal information practices change, we will post changes to this policy. We encourage you to check this policy periodically to learn of any updates.
